Modal Verbs

Existen verbos que no se conjugan, verbos que no siguen las reglas de los demás verbos, no tienen infinitivo, ni gerundios, y su significado depende casi por completo del contexto.
¿Difícil de imaginar, no? En inglés a este tipo de verbos se les denomina “modal verbs” Esta lista de verbos modales puede serte de mucha utilidad si te la memorizas y sigues los consejos para utilizarlos.
Características
No se conjugan según el pronombre.
No se les aplican las reglas gramaticales de terceras personas (“s” - “es”)
Van acompañados de otro verbo en forma infinitiva sin la preposición “to”.
Los verbos modales en inglés más usados

Could | ability requesting | He could do the sum. Could you help me to solve the problem? |
May | possibility permission offering | He may come here today. May I come in? May I get you a cup of tea? |
Might | possibility suggestion | His statement might be true. You might just as well go. |
Must | obligation certainty strong probability prohibition | You must obey your teacher. Man must die one day. You must be tired after a long journey. We must not waste our time. |
Dare | have the courage challenge negative force interrogation | He dare not say so. (not dares’) I dare you to prove that you’ve said so. He dare not follow you. Who dares to enter the room? |
Need | prohibition interrogation | You need not (needn’t) come here. Need he go there? |
Used to | habitual action in the past | My father used to teach me English. |
Ought to | obligation strong likelihood | You ought to work hard. The lawyer ought to be able to help you. |

Oraciones básicas a la hora de aprender inglés:
Oraciones afirmativas
Oraciones negativas
Oraciones interrogativas
Los verbos modales se pueden aplicar de las siguientes tres maneras.
1: Oraciones afirmativas
Sujeto + modal verb + verb (infinitive form) + complemento.
E.g. I should go back and grab my friend’s jacket.
2: Oraciones negativas
Sujeto + modal verb (negativo) + verbo (infinitivo) + complemento.
Para convertir un modal verb a negativo podemos simplemente agregar “not” después del modal verb. Como en el caso de “might not” “may not” “ought not to” “shall not”
Sin embargo, en la práctica se usan diversas contracciones. Así tenemos:
Can’t, couldn’t, shouldn't, won’t, wouldn’t, mustn’t,
E.g. I can’t go to that party today - No puedo ir a esa fiesta hoy.
3: Oraciones interrogativas:
Los auxiliares en una pregunta se colocan antes del sujeto, lo mismo ocurre con los modal verbs:
Verbo modal + sujeto +verbo infinitivo + complemento+ ?
E.g. Would you like to go out with me?

I would never do something like that. | Nunca haría algo así. |
They’ll come today, because they might be busy next week | (ellos) vendrán hoy porque tal vez estén ocupados la otra semana |
We may need to buy more winter clothes | Quizá/ tal vez necesitemos comprar más ropa de invierno |
Los modal verbs pueden ser complejos porque su significado es muy parecido, pero usar uno y otro pueden resultar en un significado completamente diferente. Algunas veces se usan sin pensar si realmente expresan lo que queremos comunicar. Si al principio te confundes un poco es normal. Con práctica todo es posible
