Perfect tenses: aprende cómo usar el tiempo perfecto en inglés

¿Qué son los “Perfect Tenses”?

In English, when we talk about the “perfect” aspect, we’re referring to an action that is connected to another point in time — it may have started earlier, just finished, or will be completed in the future.

The structure is always similar: have / has / had / will have + past participle.

For example:

• “I have eaten breakfast.”

• “She has finished her homework.”

Present Perfect

Let’s start with the Present Perfect. We use it to discuss actions that happened at some point before now, but we don’t say when. For example:

• “I have visited London.” This means that at some point in your life, you visited London — but you’re not specifying when.

Another example:

• “She has just finished her lunch.” That means the action happened very recently.

Tip: Use “have” with I, you, we, they and “has” with he, she, it.

Past Perfect

Now, the Past Perfect. We use had + past participle to mention something that happened before another action in the past. For example:

• “I had eaten before I went to the party.” This means: first I ate, then I went to the party.

Another example:

• “He had finished his Berlitz English class homework before dinner.”

So, the Past Perfect connects two moments in the past: one that happened earlier than the other.

Future Perfect

And finally, the Future Perfect. We use will have + past participle to talk about an action that will be completed before a specific time in the future. For example:

• “By next year, I will have graduated from university.”

• “They will have finished the project by Friday.”

It’s like imagining yourself in the future, looking back at something that will already be done.

•  “Yo ya había terminado mi tarea antes de cenar.”

The correct answer is:

• “I had finished my homework before dinner.”

Now, one more:

• “Para el 2030, habré visitado diez países.”

Answer:

• “By 2030, I will have visited ten countries.”
