英語で議論や交渉をしていると、必ずと言っていいほど反論や壁にぶち当たります。議論は、合意形成への壁や反対意見を洗い出すためにあるようなものだからです。
では反論されたらどうするのか？同意しない相手はもっともな理由があって反対しているはずです。
決定に関係する人みんなが100%ハッピーな状況はそうそうありません。でも関係者一人一人が自分にとってのメリットを見出せるように、リーダーが視点を変えて話を展開することができれば、みんなが納得するので話を前に進めることができるようになります。
逆もしかりで、相手の考えに100%同意できないのなら、相手に自分がものごとを捉えている視点を共有して、なぜ反対しているのか理解してもらいましょう。
「視点」は英語で perspective または point of view です。この記事ではこれらのような「視点」にまつわる英語表現を使って、相手の考える切り口に変化をもたらす、いわば話法の引き出しを５つご紹介します。
最後に練習問題を用意したので、各フレーズを声に出してスムーズに言えるようになるまで練習した上で、挑戦してみてください。
From ____’s point of view または From ____’s perspective を使って、反対意見を述べる相手に、違う視点から考えてもらうよう促すことができます。例を見てみましょう。
A: We need to start conducting internal audits soon.
B: Internal audits? That sounds like a lot of extra work for the people in the field. I think they are busy enough already.
A: That’s true, but from the customer’s point of view, they would feel more comfortable working with a company that is careful about service quality. Also from the field’s perspective, I think they want to be reassured that they are following the right standards. Then, they can focus their attention on the services they provide.
A: そろそろ内部監査を導入するべきです。
B: 内部監査ですか？現場の人たちの仕事がドッと増える気がしてならないです。もう十分忙しいのに。
A: それはそうですが、お客様の視点から考えると、サービスの質に気を遣っている会社との方が安心して取引できます。それに現場の視点から考えても、正しい基準に沿って仕事をしていることが保証されれば、サービス提供に意識を集中できると思います。
逆に、相手の考えの穴を指摘するために、違う視点から考えてもらうためにも使えます。例を見てみましょう。
A: We need to start conducting internal audits soon. Our customers would feel more comfortable working with a company that is careful about service quality.
B: You’re right, but from the field’s point of view, they would feel like they are not trusted. I think you should communicate the reasons for the internal audit very carefully before you start doing it.
A: そろそろ内部監査を導入するべきです。お客様はサービスの質に気を遣っている会社との方が安心して取引できます。
B: その通りですが、現場の視点から考えると、監査を行うことによって信用されていないと感じてしまうでしょう。事前に監査を導入する理由を丁寧に説明した方がいいと思います。
Considering ____は人の視点以外の観点を取り入れる時に使えます。たとえば「コストを考慮すると」「納期を考慮すると」など。例を見てみましょう。
A: I think we should hire employees from overseas. Considering the decrease in the youth population, we shouldn’t limit our candidates to Japanese university graduates.
B: Of course we’ll need to start doing that sometime in the future, but considering the English ability of our current employees, I don’t think we’re ready yet. There would be serious miscommunication if we went ahead and hired foreigners.
A: 従業員を海外から雇用するべきです。若年層人口の減少を考慮すると、雇用を日本の新卒に限定するべきではありません。
B: もちろん行く行くはそうしなければならなくなるでしょう。しかし社員の現在の英語力を考慮すると、まだ早いのではと思います。今の状態のまま外国人を雇えば重大なミスコミュニケーションが起こりかねません。

訳すと意味が微妙に違うものの、In terms of ____ の使い方は Considering ____ とほとんど変わりません。
A: So what did you think of the job candidate?
B: Well, in terms of experience, she seems to be very good. But in terms of flexibility, I think it will be hard for her to adjust to the work here.
A: 面接に来た人はどうでしたか？
B: 彼女の経験の観点から言うとかなり良さそうです。ただ彼女の柔軟性の観点から、ここでの仕事に慣れて行くのは難しいかもしれませんね。
On the bright side は、ネガティブな意見が出た時に、ものごとの見方を明るい面に向けるために使います。
A: Our marketing campaign was rather unsuccessful. We gained some new customers, but at the same time, lost some existing customers because they didn’t agree to the new company image the campaign presented.
B: That’s too bad. To be honest, I didn’t like the new company image idea either. But on the bright side, we now know how our customers would react to changes.
A: 先日のキャンペーンはあまり上手くいきませんでした。新しい顧客をある程度獲得できたものの、同時に、キャンペーンで打ち出した企業イメージに納得できないことを理由に一定の既存顧客を失ってしまいました。
B: それは残念です。正直に言うと、私も新しい企業イメージはあまり好きになれませんでした。でもいい方向に考えると、これで顧客が変化に対してどう反応するかがわかりましたね。
If we put ourselves in ____’s shoes は「（わたしたちが）〇〇の靴を履くと」と直訳できますが、「〇〇の立場からすると」を意味する慣用句です。使い方の例を見てみましょう。
A: We would like to give incentive bonuses to every salesperson for every new customer they make sales to.
B: That’s a great idea. But if we put ourselves in the payroll people’s shoes, it would be a nightmare because they would have to calculate incentives for all 200 salespeople.
A: But, if we put ourselves in the entire staff’s shoes including payroll people’s, it will be a clear message that the company rewards quality work and I think that will motivate them.
A: セールスパーソン全てに新規に獲得した顧客一件につき奨励金を出したいと思っています。
B: それはいい案ですね。でも給与課の立場からすると、セールスパーソン200人全員の奨励金を計算しないといけなくて大変そうですね。
A: でも給与課を含む社員全員の立場からすると、これは会社が社員の成果をきちんと評価するというメッセージになるので、やる気が出ると思います。
ではここまで練習したフレーズを以下の議論の中で使ってみましょう。Aさんの意見に対して、Bさんが新たな観点から意見を述べます。Bさんの意見に合うフレーズがなにか考えてみてください。答えは記事の最後にあります。
A: Did you know that there is one bookstore going out of business every day?
B: Yeah it’s too bad.
A: I only buy books online so I don’t mind so much.
B: But some people like to walk around in a bookstore and pick up a book with their own hands, read the first few pages, and then decide if they want to buy it. 1. , it’s really sad that they are losing a place for their hobbies every day.
A: Yeah that’s true. But 2. , there are some new types of bookstores recently where people can sit down on a sofa, drink coffee and read. They can even read books they haven’t paid for. I don’t think it’s good business for those bookstores, though.
B: Yes, 3. sales, it’s probably not a good business model. But in terms of attracting people, I think it’s effective. If you stay to read a book for an hour or so, you will get thirsty or hungry. You’ll probably be in a good mood after you read an interesting book, and you may feel like spending money. Maybe the purpose of the bookstore is to attract shoppers in a good mood.
A: 毎日本屋が一件つぶれてるって知ってた？
B: うん。残念だよね。
A: まあ私はいつもネットで本を買うからいいんだけどね。
B: でも本屋を歩き回って本を手に取って、最初の数ページを読んでみてから買うか決めるのが好きな人もいるからね。 1. 趣味に使える場所が毎日減っているのは悲しいね。
A: それはそうだね。でも 2. 最近はソファーに座ってコーヒーを飲みながら本を読める新しいタイプの本屋ができているからね。買ってもいない本も読めるし。その本屋さんにとってはあまりいい商売だとは思えないけどね。
B: うん、売上 3. あまりいいビジネスモデルではないかもね。でも集客の観点から言うと、効果的なんじゃないかな。一時間以上そこで本を読んでいたら、喉も渇くしお腹もすくかもしれない。面白い本を読んだあとなら機嫌がいいだろうし、お金を使いたい気分になるかもしれない。もしかしたらその本屋の目的は購買意欲が高い人の集客なんじゃないかな。
