Who are the students behind the program?

Nineteen final-year students from an Italian vocational school arrived in Budapest with one shared goal: to complete a required part of their studies. Specializing in hospitality, tourism, and catering, they are preparing for careers where daily interaction with international guests is unavoidable.

For them, this program is not just an academic task - it’s a first glimpse into their professional future.

What motivates (or doesn’t motivate) them?

Interestingly, not all students started with strong expectations. According to their chaperone, many joined simply because the program is mandatory.

Yet, once immersed in the experience, something begins to shift. Being surrounded by a new environment, new people, and real-life situations gradually builds curiosity - and often, confidence.

What do students think about the Berlitz method?

Students repeatedly emphasized how different this learning experience feels compared to traditional education. Instead of passively listening for hours, they are actively involved: answering questions, participating in discussions, and practicing in real time.

One student pointed out that this method helps them understand gaps in their knowledge - things they didn’t remember or never really learned properly - and rebuild their skills from the ground up.

Why does English suddenly become “real”?

Back home, English might feel like just another subject. In Budapest, it becomes a necessity. Whether ordering food, navigating the city, or interacting during professional visits, students quickly realize that English is the bridge between them and the world around them.

For future chefs, waiters, or hotel staff, this realization is crucial: their career success will depend on their ability to communicate.

What challenges do students face?

The group is diverse - not only in personality but also in language level. Some students start from very basic knowledge, while others are more advanced. This can be intimidating, especially for beginners.

However, supportive teachers and adaptive methods ensure that everyone can participate. Even students with difficulties are included and encouraged, helping them overcome barriers step by step.

What stays with them beyond the classroom?

Beyond language learning, students gain something less tangible but equally important: independence. Exploring Budapest, making choices about how to spend their free time, and managing different situations all contribute to personal growth.

They also encounter cultural differences - from food habits to daily routines - which broadens their perspective and prepares them for international work environments.

Final thoughts: a turning point for students

For many of these students, this experience may start as an obligation - but it often becomes a turning point.

They leave not only with improved English skills, but with greater self-confidence, clearer career awareness, and a deeper understanding of what it means to work in a global environment.

Because in the end, this journey is not just about learning a language - it’s about discovering what they are capable of.
