What are abbreviations?

Abbreviations are shortened forms of words and phrases. While some are informal (texting slang), many are appropriate even in formal contexts - think Mr., Dr., P.S. and business acronyms used in corporate emails. Language centres in the UAE commonly include abbreviation practice in business English and exam prep (IELTS/TOEFL) courses, because understanding them improves listening, reading and writing.
