How Our Language Placement Test Works

You do not need to study for the Italian test— it is designed to assess your current ability.

To prepare, find a quiet spot where you will not be interrupted. The test will take a maximum of 30 minutes to complete.

You will be asked 63 questions and must pick the most appropriate in-language response. Your answers will be timed so we can understand how long it takes you to comprehend the language.

Questions will range across key areas of the Italian language including:

  • Vocabulary – You will be asked questions that will test the breadth of your Italian vocabulary and how nuanced your understanding of the language is.
  • Listening – The Italian test will evaluate how well you can listen and comprehend the language as it is spoken via audio questions.

The test takes approximately 30-35 minutes to complete. You will answer 68 multiple-choice questions covering vocabulary, grammar, listening, and reading skills.

There are five proficiency levels on the Berlitz scale: Functional, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, Advanced, and Professional. Each level has two steps, so the gradings range from 1 to 10.

  • Functional, Levels 1 and 2: You have a rudimentary understanding of the language and can ask and answer basic questions.
  • Intermediate, Levels 3 and 4: You can follow the general meaning of conversations and can handle uncomplicated communication in social and work situations.
  • Upper Intermediate, Levels 5 and 6: You can sustain general conversation at work and in social situations.
  • Advanced, Levels 7 and 8: You have a more complex grasp of the language and can keep up with technical and demanding conversations.
  • Professional, Levels 9 and 10: You have a free and natural grasp of the language and are comfortable communicating in any setting, including public speaking and academic situations.

You will receive your results within one minute of completing your Italian proficiency test. The results will include your Berlitz language level, as well as where you sit on the global CEFR scale.
