What are adjectives?

Simply put, adjectives are words that describe nouns. For the purposes of this article, it can be helpful to think about these two types of adjectives:

• Qualifying adjectives

These describe a noun and offer up more information about it. The adjectives included in this article will be qualifying adjectives!

• Possessive adjectives

These adjectives show to what or to whom something belongs. These adjectives won’t be the main star of this article, but you can check out our lesson on Italian possessive adjectives for more info.

Using adjectives in Italian is a bit different than using them in English, and there are a few grammatical rules to keep in mind. So, before we delve into our 161 adjectives, let’s review four important points. Andiamo!

Masculine, feminine, numbers…Oh my!

In Italian, an adjective must agree with the gender and number of the noun it's modifying. Basically, the ending of an adjective could change based on the noun’s gender and number. In Italian, most adjectives either end in -o or -e.

Let’s look at a quick example with the word pulito (clean).

Great! Now that we’ve figured out the endings, it’s time to start describing nouns in Italian. Remember: You’ll need the definite articles, too.

What about adjectives ending in -e? The process is actually a bit simpler. Let’s use an example with the adjective indipendente (independent). In these cases, the -e ending will remain the same in the singular versions, and change to -i in the plural forms.

Describing colors in Italian

Italian is a colorful language, and these words will be helpful if you ever want to describe the colors of the beautiful Tuscan countryside, or the varying hues of famous Italian paintings. Just keep in mind that colors can be both nouns and adjectives. So, if you want to ask what color something is, use these phrases:

• Singular: Di che colore è la maglia? (What color is the sweater?)
• Plural: Di che colore sono i pantaloni? (What color are the pants?)

And for some specific names of colors, keep this phrase in mind:

• Singular: La maglia è color lavanda. (The sweater is lavender.)
• Plural: I pantaloni sono color pastello. (The pants are a pastel color.)

Mio marito è molto sicuro di se.

(My husband is very confident.)

Questa birra è troppo aspra.

This beer is too sour.

Guardare i film d’azione con te è veramente stressante.

Watching action films with you is really stressful.

Penso che non sia così interessante.

I don’t think it’s that/so interesting.
