German Citizenship Requirement

To become a German citizen through naturalization, applicants generally must meet several legal requirements. These usually include German language skills at the B1 level and sufficient knowledge of Germany’s legal system, society, and living conditions. In most cases, this knowledge is demonstrated by passing the German Citizenship Test.

Applicants can prove their required German language skills through a recognized language exam or other officially accepted forms of evidence. The competent naturalization authority determines which documents are required in each individual case.

As an official telc examination center, Berlitz offers recognized German language exams at more than 40 locations across Germany to help you meet the language requirement for naturalization. In addition, you can register in person for the German Citizenship Test and take the test at selected Berlitz centers.
